Burroughs Elementary, February 2026
Fresno Discovery Center partners yearly with school districts such as FUSD, where our trained educators lead lessons, support students, and engage in intelligent conversation with the youth of the Central Valley. Through our year-long lesson plan, we cover a large variety of topics ranging across all aspects of STEAM. Sometimes, our curriculum bridges two elements together, such as our Botany in Art exhibition.
Through this lesson, our educators spend a week discussing topics of botany, including the biodiversity of flora, pollen, ecosystems, and fauna. One of the activities requires students to pursue a mixed media approach to imagery, using colored pencils and tissue paper to create their own compositions of flora and their ecosystem. These 2D images with aspects of 3D elements result in ‘Relief images’, which are then framed and displayed together in our gallery.
“This show was especially fun to work with, as the variety of colors and shapes between each subject is very distinguished. This meant that there was a lot of back-and-forth to find a solid balance within the gallery. My favorite part from this show is that the relief from each work causes the plexiglass to bow, creating this interesting ‘dome-like’ effect when passing by.” -Miguel Gamez-Macias, Curator
